Animation Section 2026: A Tribute to Maria Roberta Novielli
Frame from Extra by Ken Ishii (1995), directed by Kōji Morimoto. © R&S Records / Studio 4°C. A work she highlighted and valued throughout her research on Japanese cinema, which now ideally accompanies our section.
The 2026 Animation Section pays tribute to Professor Maria Roberta Novielli, a leading figure in the study of Japanese cinema and animation in Italy, university lecturer, and a dedicated promoter of cultural projects connected to innovation and the dissemination of images.
The historic Animation Section of our Festival, which was created even before the Festival itself through our studies dedicated to moving images, takes on a particular significance this year through a selection of works she recommended and valued throughout her path of research and dissemination.
For many years, Roberta accompanied our journey with her expertise, her passion for Asian cinema, and her critical perspective.
Her interest in new forms of interaction between images, technology, and audiences was also expressed through immersiVenice, a project she conceived and presented in June 2026.
This edition aims to preserve and share the animation works she had recommended to us, as a sign of recognition for her contribution to Asian cinema, Japanese animation, and digital culture in Italy.
